Clothing from the Perspective of Islam – Part 4

Is it wrong to wear elegant, expensive, or stylish clothing?

Is Islam a religion that demands simplicity to the point of dullness? Or does it allow beauty, dignity, and refinement?

Let us explore this deeply.

Two Types of Clothing: Covering vs. Honor

First, we must understand that clothing serves two purposes:

  1. To cover the body (basic necessity)
  2. To enhance dignity and appearance (refinement)

Some garments merely fulfill the requirement of covering one’s modesty.

But others:

  • Elevate a person’s appearance
  • Reflect dignity
  • Convey respect in public spaces

Islam acknowledges both. It does not restrict us to the lowest level. Rather, it allows us to rise—while maintaining humility.

The Misunderstanding of “Showy Clothing”

There are narrations which seem to warn against “showy” or “flashy” clothing.

Some people interpret this to mean:

  • Wearing a suit is wrong
  • Dressing differently is wrong
  • Looking elegant is wrong

But this is a misunderstanding.

What is “showy clothing” really?

It is not about the clothing itselfIt is about the intention behind it.

If a person dresses:

  • To show superiority
  • To impress arrogantly
  • To belittle others

Then that is blameworthy.

But if a person dresses:

  • To look presentable
  • To honor an occasion
  • To appear dignified

Then this is not only allowed—it is encouraged.

Qur’anic Command: Dress Well for Worship

Allahﷻ Himself commands in the Qur’an: O children of Adam, adorn yourselves at every place of worship.

This is profound.

It means:

  • Do not come to the المسجد carelessly
  • Do not appear untidy before Allahﷻ
  • Present yourself with dignity

This clearly proves that: Islam encourages beauty and refinement—especially in noble settings.

So how can we claim that wearing good clothing is wrong? It is not wrong. It is part of honoring Allahﷻ.

Allahﷻ Loves Beauty

The Prophet ﷺ said: Allahﷻ is beautiful, and He loves beauty.” This single statement removes countless misconceptions.

Allahﷻ:

  • Created beauty
  • Loves beauty
  • Wants His servants to reflect beauty

So, when a person wears:

  • Clean clothes
  • Well-fitted garments
  • Elegant attire

This is not arrogance. This is appreciation of Allahﷻ’s نعمة (blessing).

What is True Arrogance?

Here is where the real lesson lies.

A companion once asked: “If a person likes his clothes and shoes to look good, is that arrogance?”

The Prophet ﷺ replied: “No.”

Then he explained:

Arrogance is:

  • Rejecting the truth
  • Looking down upon people

This is critical.

Arrogance is not in:

  • Your shirt
  • Your shoes
  • Your appearance

It is in your heart.

If you wear expensive clothing but:

  • Treat others with respect
  • Accept truth when corrected
  • Remain humble

Then you are not arrogant.

But if you wear simple clothing and:

  • Mock others
  • Reject truth
  • Feel superior

Then you are arrogant. This is the معيار (true measure).

Examples to Reflect On

Let us reflect practically.

A man wears:

  • A costly watch
  • A branded shoe
  • A fine garment

Is he arrogant? Not necessarily.

But if he thinks:

  • “Others are beneath me”
  • “I am superior because of this”

Then arrogance has entered.

Similarly:

A person eats expensive food. Another eats simple food.

Is one better? No.

But if one mocks the other— That is arrogance.

This principle applies to:

  • Clothing
  • Food
  • Houses
  • Lifestyle

Islam does not judge the possession. It judges the attitude.

Special Clothing for Special Occasions

Now let us address another important point. Is it allowed to dress specially for events?

For example:

  • Weddings
  • Eid
  • Public gatherings
  • Meetings with dignitaries

The answer is: Yes. Absolutely.

In fact, this was suggested even during the time of the Prophet ﷺ.

A companion once brought a fine garment and suggested: “Wear this on Eid and when meeting delegations.”

Notice this carefully.

The suggestion itself proves:

  • Dressing well for important occasions is acceptable
  • Presenting oneself with dignity is encouraged

The Prophet ﷺ did not reject the idea of elegance. He only rejected the garment because it was made of silk—which is prohibited for men. Not because it was “too good.” This distinction is essential.

When Beauty Becomes a Distraction

However, there is one important caution. The Prophet ﷺ once wore a highly decorated garment.

During prayer, its patterns distracted him.

After the prayer, he removed it and returned it.

Why? Not because it was forbidden.

But because: It affected his focus in worship.

This teaches us:

  • Beauty is allowed
  • But عبادہ (worship) must not be compromised

If something distracts you from Allahﷻ— Then it is better to avoid it.

Moderation: The Core Principle

The Prophet ﷺ gave a beautiful guideline:

  • Eat
  • Give charity
  • Wear clothing

But avoid:

  • Arrogance
  • Wastefulness

This is the balance of Islam. Not extreme simplicity. Not excessive luxury.

But moderation with consciousness.

Displaying Allahﷻ’s Blessings

There is another profound teaching.

If Allahﷻ has blessed, you—

It is allowed for that blessing to be visible. Not for arrogance. But for gratitude.

When a person dresses well within limits:

  • It reflects Allahﷻ’s favor
  • It encourages others
  • It creates dignity in society

Even practically:

If you appear completely poor while having wealth— People may not approach you for help. But if your condition reflects stability— You become a means for others. Thus, even appearance can become a form of service.

Final Reflection

Islam does not demand that you suppress beauty. It does not ask you to abandon dignity. It does not force you into a single mold.

Instead, it teaches:

  • Be clean
  • Be presentable
  • Be dignified
  • Be grateful

But at the same time:

  • Do not be arrogant
  • Do not belittle others
  • Do not waste
  • Do not forget Allahﷻ

This is the balance. This is the beauty of Islam.

In the upcoming posts, we will further explore:

  • The limits of modesty
  • Cultural practices vs. Islamic rulings
  • The deeper ethics behind appearance

May Allahﷻ grant us sincerity, humility, and beauty in both our outward appearance and our inner character.
