Can We Act Contrary to the Supplication (du‘a) We Made?

Question:

Can we act contrary to the supplication (du‘a) we made? For example, while praying that my company should retain me, can I prepare a résumé and seek another job?

Answer:

He says he prays: “O Allahﷻ, do not remove me from this company; do not dismiss me.” Yet he searches for a better-paying job and applies for it. Is that contrary to his du‘a?

The answer: No. You have misunderstood the meaning of your du‘a. You asked that they should not dismiss you. You did not ask that you yourself should never leave, nor that you should not seek better opportunities. Your du‘a meant: “Do not let them terminate me and leave me without livelihood.” It does not mean you cannot seek improvement. Allahﷻ looks at your intention in the du‘a. If you secure a better job and then leave, that does not contradict your supplication. You only asked not to be dismissed without provision.

The intention to looking for new role simultaneously is not even mentioned in your dua itself. Therefore, there is no sin on this scenario.
