Can marriage be conducted during the waning moon phase?

Question:

Can marriage be conducted during the waning moon phase?

Answer:

People divide the lunar cycle into two phases:

  • Waxing phase (growing moon)
  • Waning phase (shrinking moon)

They believe marriage during the waxing moon will grow and prosper, and marriage during the waning moon will decline. This belief is false and has no basis in Islam.

Scientifically, the moon does not grow or shrink. The moon remains the same size. Only the sunlight reflecting on it changes, making it appears larger or smaller. There is no connection between the moon phase and success or failure in marriage.

If waxing and waning phases truly affected life, then half the year would always be good and half the year always bad. But in reality, good and bad events happen on all days. People are born and die on both waxing and waning phases.

Marriage success depends on Allahﷻ’s decree, not moon phases. Islam does not recognize “good days” or “bad days” based on moon phases.

Choosing or avoiding marriage based on waxing or waning moon is superstition. Marriage can be conducted on any day. Believing otherwise is a sign of weak faith.
