Does Missing Jumu’ah while working under a Non-Muslim Employer considered Sin

Question:

He (the questioner) says he works under a non-Muslim employer, and because of that, sometimes he is unable to attend the Jumu‘ah prayer. He asks: if he misses Jumu‘ah and instead performs Dhuhr prayer, will he be sinful?

Answer:

He explains that his employer does not give permission for him to leave and attend the Friday prayer.

To answer this, we must first understand how serious the matter of Jumu‘ah is in Islam.

The Prophetﷺonce stood upon the pulpit and gave a stern warning. He said that people must stop abandoning Jumu‘ah, otherwise Allahﷻ  will seal their hearts.

What does it mean for the heart to be sealed?

A sealed heart is not simply a metaphor. It means that faith begins to disappear little by little. Iman becomes weak. The attachment a person once had to religion slowly fades away.

Jumu‘ah is like a weekly renewal of faith. It is a weekly recharge for the believer. Even if a person struggles with the five daily prayers during the week, the Jumu‘ah prayer often keeps his connection with Allahﷻ  alive.

But if Jumu‘ah is repeatedly abandoned, something begins to change inside the heart. Gradually the fear of Allahﷻ  diminishes. The sense of accountability in the Hereafter becomes weaker. Slowly, religion itself begins to lose its meaning in a person’s life.

In another narration reported in Sunan an-Nasā’i, the Prophetﷺsaid that whoever neglects three Jumu‘ah prayers out of negligence, Allahﷻ  will seal his heart.

Notice the seriousness of this warning. Missing a single Jumu‘ah may occur due to circumstances, and Allahﷻ  may forgive. But when three Jumu‘ah prayers are neglected continuously and carelessly, the sealing of the heart becomes a real danger.

So when someone says, “I work for this employer, therefore I cannot attend Jumu‘ah,” we must pause and reflect. Is our work more important than the state of our heart? Do we want to leave this world as believers?

If we do, then our hearts must remain open to faith, not sealed like the hearts described for disbelievers.

So what should a person do in such a situation? He should begin seeking work that allows him to attend Jumu‘ah. At the very least, he should make a sincere intention before Allahﷻ  and say, “O Allahﷻ , I will change this situation soon.”

But if a person becomes comfortable with the situation and simply tells himself, “I will manage like this,” then he is moving closer to the very danger the Prophetﷺwarned about.

Fear Allahﷻ  in this matter. Even if it means taking half a day of leave, losing a small portion of salary, or adjusting your work schedule, make the effort. In many places, even government offices provide time for Jumu‘ah prayer. You are not chained without options. With some effort and determination, attendance is often possible.

The real problem is that sometimes we look for excuses rather than solutions. Do not abandon Jumu‘ah. The warnings about the sealing of the heart are extremely severe, and no believer should take them lightly.
