Question:
I bought a plot using a bank loan (with interest). I still have 10 years of EMI payments left. I now realize it was wrong and want to sell the property. However, selling will take time. Can I continue paying the EMI until the property is sold?
Answer:
The ruling here is similar. You have already entered into a contract. If you stop paying, the bank will seize the property. You are now in a state of compulsion due to the existing contract. Your repentance means you will not enter into any new interest-based contracts in the future. But you are compelled to fulfill this one. You can continue paying the EMIs while trying to sell the property.
If you find a buyer and can settle the entire loan with the bank, then do so. If you can’t sell it immediately, you must continue to pay as per the agreement to avoid losing the property and the money already paid.
This compulsion removes the sin, provided you are sincere in your repentance and do not engage in any new such contracts.
