What Does Hadith say about a Person Who abandons Haram Income?

Question:

I heard in a bayan that if a person abandons income that comes through haram for the sake of Allahﷻ, then Allahﷻ will grant him economic self-sufficiency in the future. Is there such a hadith?

Answer:

The statement being mentioned is: If I have something haram and I leave it for the sake of Allahﷻ, refusing to take it, then Allahﷻ will not leave me in hardship. Allahﷻ will give me a self-sufficient life. It was said in a bayan that the Messenger of Allahﷻ said this. He is asking whether such a hadith exists.

There is no hadith with this exact wording found in any authentic hadith collection with a chain of narration. It is simply quoted in some later books. The wording goes like this:

“Whoever leaves haram out of fear of Allahﷻ, Allahﷻ will give him halal in its place. Whatever haram he abandons, Allahﷻ will grant him many times over in halal.”

This statement appears in many books with phrases like “it is narrated” or “it is reported.” But it is not recorded as a hadith of the Prophetﷺ  ﷺ. It is not found in authentic hadith collections. It appears in later writings without proper authentication.

However, the concept that if one avoids haram, Allahﷻ will provide compensation is in line with the Qur’an. Allahﷻ says in the Qur’an (65:2–3): “Whoever fears Allahﷻ, He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.”

If a person fears Allahﷻ, that includes avoiding haram. One does not avoid haram except out of fear of Allahﷻ. So, when Allahﷻ says He will provide from unexpected sources that supports the general idea that Allahﷻ will compensate.

So instead of saying “The Prophetﷺ  said this,” one should quote the Qur’anic verse. That will be authentic and sufficient.
