Is it permissible to marry a lawyer groom or bride

Question:

Some lawyers are known to argue for the guilty, turning a bad person into “good” in court. Is it permissible to give a daughter in marriage to a lawyer?

Answer:

This question is similar to asking if it is permissible to marry a government employee who might take bribes, or a police officer who might be unjust. You cannot generalize about an entire profession. There are good lawyers who take only just cases. There are also lawyers who might knowingly defend a guilty person.

The criterion for marriage is not the profession itself, but the individual’s character, piety, and morality. If a particular lawyer is known to misuse his profession, to oppress others, or to have bad character, then you should not marry him. But you cannot rule out all lawyers. The same applies to any profession—politics, police, civil service, etc. Judge the individual, not the entire field.

The key is to assess the person. Will he use his position to mistreat his wife? Will he bully the family? If there is a concern about a potential groom’s character, regardless of his profession, you should not proceed. The goal of marriage is a peaceful, happy life. Choose a person who is righteous and God-fearing, not just one with a particular job title.
