Clothing from the perspective of Islam – Part 20

After establishing with overwhelming clarity that Face covering is not an obligation in Islam, We now turn to the final arguments presented by those who still insist otherwise

Because when evidence is clear only misinterpretation remains.

The Situation Today

Despite Qur’anic clarity, prophetic practice and social evidence, some still argue: “Women must cover their faces.”

On what basis? It’s totally not on clear commands but on misunderstood texts

The First Argument: The Ihram Hadith

There is a well-known narration about woman in the state of Ihram (during Hajj or Umrah) is not allowed to cover her face

From this, some claim: “If she cannot cover her face in Ihram, then outside Ihram, she must cover it.” At first glance It sounds logical but in reality, it is deeply flawed.

Understanding the Nature of This Argument

This argument depends on reverse inference because if something is prohibited in one situation then it must be required in all others

But Is This How Islam Works? No. This is not how language, logic and Sharia works.

A Simple Example

If someone says: “Do not talk during the prayer”

Does it mean: “You must talk outside prayer”? Of course not.

Another Example

If someone says: “Do not behave improperly in the المسجد”

Does it mean: “You may behave improperly outside”? No. So, What Does It Mean? it means this act is already wrong but here, it is emphasized even more

Applying This to Ihram

When the Prophet ﷺ said: “A woman in Ihram should not cover her face”

It does NOT mean “She must cover it outside Ihram” rather it means even in a sacred state face covering is not required

A Powerful Logical Reflection

Ihram is:

  • A state of increased عبادہ (worship)
  • Greater discipline
  • Higher spiritual awareness

Now Ask Yourself: If face covering was an act of modesty and a religious obligation, would it be removed or increased during Ihram? Surely It would be increased

But What Do We See? Even in Ihram face covering is not allowed. This leads to only one conclusion i.e., face covering is not a religious obligation

The Error in Interpretation

The mistake happens when people take a restriction in one context and derive an obligation in another. This is a misunderstanding of language itself

Second Major Misinterpretation: Qur’an 24:31

Now we move to another commonly misused verse.

Some say: “This verse proves women must cover everything except face and hands.”

Others say: “This verse proves face covering is not required.”

Here, both sides make a mistake because the verse is not about face covering at all

What Does the Verse Actually Say?

It commands believing women:

  • Lower their gaze
  • Guard their chastity
  • Not display their “Zeenah” (adornment)

Now comes the key question: What is Zeenah?

Understanding “Zeenah” (Adornment)

Zeenah does NOT mean face, hands or other body parts. It means external beautification

Examples of Zeenah

  • Jewelry
  • Makeup
  • Decorative clothing
  • Perfume
  • Henna

Why? because language itself proves this

When we say: “She is wearing adornment”, we mean something added and not her natural body

Qur’anic Evidence of Meaning

Allahﷻ describes the sky being adorned with stars and the earth being adorned with vegetation

Now reflect: Are stars part of the sky? No.

Are plants part of the earth’s structure? No. They are additions and they beautify but they are not the baseSimilarly, Zeenah is something added to the body.

Therefore, the Verse Means Women should not display their adornments, but they can conceal their faces

A Critical Clarification

The verse allows: “What is naturally visible”

What does this refer to? Not specific body parts but what cannot be hidden easily

For example: Clothing itself is a form of adornment but cannot be hidden. So, it is permitted by necessity

The Real Message of the Verse

Women are not prohibited from being seen but they are prohibited from displaying beautification to attract attention

A Modern Reality Check

Today, many women wear full coverings but also apply makeup, wear decorative clothing and use perfumes. This contradicts the verse itself because the verse focuses on removing attraction—not hiding identity

Ask yourself: Which is more aligned with the Qur’an? A visible face without adornment OR A covered face with heavy beautification?

Important Clarification

If there is adornment on the face such as makeup, then covering it temporarily is permissible. But why? not because the face must be hidden but because the adornment must not be displayed

This is a crucial distinction

Final Summary

From the above illustrations we came to know that:

Ihram hadith does not prove obligation
Reverse logic leads to false conclusions
Zeenah means adornment—not body parts
Qur’an prohibits displaying beautification
Face covering is not commanded
Modesty is about reducing attraction—not hiding identity

Islam is not complicated.

But it becomes complicated when:

  • Words are misunderstood
  • Context is ignored
  • Logic is reversed

Final Words

Do not:

  • derive obligations from silence
  • impose what Allahﷻ did not command
  • confuse interpretation with Revelation

Because the truth remains Clear, Balanced and Complete.

May Allahﷻ grant us:

  • Deep understanding
  • Sound reasoning
  • And sincerity in following His guidance

Peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allahﷻ.
