If someone does not go to the mosque, should they still repeat the Adhan?

Question:

what we said earlier is Regarding the Adhan (call to prayer), we said you don’t need to repeat the Adhan of every mosque; you only need to repeat the Adhan of the mosque you attend.

Now, he (the questioner) asks: “You said we should repeat the Adhan of the mosque we go to. I am someone who does not go to the mosque. There are legitimate reasons in Islam for not going – illness, blindness, unsafe path, or being unable to go at a specific time. I pray at home.

When the Adhan is called from a mosque, should I repeat it?” If I don’t repeat it, I won’t get the reward the Prophetﷺ mentioned. Should I repeat it?

Answer:

What does the hadith say? The Prophetﷺ said: “When you hear the Mu’adhdhin (caller to prayer), say what he says.” This is in Bukhari (611).

In Muslim, it adds after saying what he says, send blessings upon me (Salat), then ask Allahﷻ for Al-Wasilah for me, because whoever asks for Al-Wasilah for me will receive my intercession (Shafa’ah). This Al-Wasilah is a high rank in Paradise granted to only one servant.

The Prophetﷺ said, “Ask Allahﷻ to grant me Al-Wasilah. Whoever does so, my intercession will be permissible for him.” So, to attain this, even if I don’t go to the mosque, I need to repeat the Adhan to get this reward.

When we said, “repeat the Adhan of the mosque you go to,” what does that mean? If you are a person who goes to a mosque, that meaning applies. If you don’t go, what decision should you make?

If you decide to go, which mosque will you go to? You would have identified the mosque closest to you or the one you consider your local mosque. Even if you don’t go, you might send your family members there. You have a mosque you associate with.

Even women who don’t go to the mosque are told to consider the mosque their husbands, brothers, or sons go to, and repeat the Adhan from that mosque. So, even if you don’t go, identify the mosque that is closest or that you consider yours, or where your family goes, or the one you used to go to before you fell ill.

  • The Prophet instructed to repeat the Adhan when heard.
  • Even if you don’t attend the mosque:
    • Choose a local or nearest mosque
    • Repeat its Adhan to gain reward

When you recover, you’ll go back. Repeat the Adhan of that mosque. That’s all.
