Why Do People Blur Women’s Face in Videos?

Question:

If covering the face is not obligatory for women according to many evidences, then why do some people blur women’s faces in videos?

Answer:

First we must clarify the ruling. According to many evidences and the understanding of a number of scholars, covering the face is not an absolute obligation in Islam. A woman’s face is not necessarily required to be covered in every situation. However, the situation in the modern world has changed in ways that did not exist before.

Today, images and videos circulate instantly across the internet. Once a face appears online, it can be copied, edited, and reused in countless ways. Unfortunately, we now see many cases where images are misused. Faces are sometimes morphed into obscene or inappropriate material. With the development of artificial intelligence and digital editing tools, it has become even easier for people to manipulate someone’s image without permission.

Because of these realities, some people choose to blur women’s faces in videos. This is not because they claim that covering the face is an obligation. Rather, it is done as a precaution — a step taken to protect the dignity and safety of the person.

So blurring the face is not a religious obligation in itself. At the same time, doing so for the sake of protection is not sinful either. It is simply a permissible precaution taken in response to the risks that exist in the modern digital environment.
