Should We Repeat the Maghrib Prayer When the Imam Doesn’t recite aloud?

Question:

If the Imam performs the Maghrib prayer without reciting aloud, should the prayer be repeated?

Answer:

In congregational prayer we know the pattern of recitation:

  • In Fajr, the Imam recites aloud in both rakʿahs.
  • In Dhuhr, the Imam recites silently in all four rakʿahs.
  • In Asr, the Imam also recites silently in all four rakʿahs.
  • In Maghrib, the Imam recites aloud in the first two rakʿahs and silently in the third.
  • In Isha, the Imam recites aloud in the first two rakʿahs and silently in the last two.

This is how it has been taught based on the practice of the Prophetﷺ.

Now the question is: suppose Maghrib prayer begins and the Imam recites Sūrat al-Fātiḥah silently instead of aloud. Is the prayer valid, or must it be repeated?

First, we must understand the purpose of reciting aloud. Reciting aloud is mainly so that those standing behind can hear the recitation. That is why it is done in congregational prayer.

Consider another situation: someone performs the same Maghrib prayer alone. When praying alone, does he raise his voice loudly? Normally he does not. He may recite softly or within himself. Therefore, the essential requirement in prayer is recitation itself, not necessarily raising the voice.

If raising the voice were mandatory, then:

  • Women praying would also have to raise their voices.
  • Someone praying alone would also have to recite loudly.

But no such obligation exists.

Thus, the obligation is reciting, especially Sūrat al-Fātiḥah. If the recitation itself is omitted, the prayer becomes invalid. But if the recitation is done silently instead of aloud, then only a Sunnah has been missed, not an essential pillar. So, the correct approach is this:

After the prayer, ask the Imam: “Did you recite in the first two rakʿahs or not?”

If he says: “I recited silently,” then the prayer is valid. A Sunnah was missed, but the prayer does not need to be repeated.

If he says: “I forgot to recite completely,” then the prayer is invalid, because recitation is obligatory.

Sometimes an Imam may appear silent because he is reciting softly, or perhaps he mistakenly thought he was praying Asr and therefore recited silently.

Therefore, the matter must be clarified by asking him.  If he says he recited internally, the prayer stands. If he admits that he did not recite at all, then the prayer must be repeated because prayer without recitation is not valid.
